Hi Everyone This week around campus you might be noticing people wearing blue, yellow and purple t-shirts, signs, banners and leaflets! Do you know what this is for? There is a Referendum happening this Thursday through to Friday (27th -28th March). What is this about you ask? Referendum Overview: 1. An extension to the Sports Arena including the construction of a Climbing Wall, a 25m Pool with Diving facilities and expansion of studio facilities. 2. A needs analysis carried out among Students, Students Union and Student Services with a view to determining if there is a need for a new Students Centre and if so what it would look like and what facilities it should have. 3. An upgrade of Maguires field to include Gravel Raft Pitches, An All Weather Pitch, Handball Alleys and a Hurling Wall. If students VOTE YES: Each student will be charged a levy of €67 annually, the proposed projects will go ahead and the University will be enhanced for students. If students VOTE NO: Students will not be charged a €67 levy and there will be no Arena extension, handball alleys, climbing wall, development of Maguires or the student centre. Blue t-shirts are for unbiased information. Yellow and Purple t-shirts are for the Yes Vote. Why I, Thomas, am voting yes is because: • The University of Limerick have secured a long term loan facility from the European Investment Bank, part of which will be used to fund this project, of which a portion of it will be repaid by the levy. If we vote no we will lose this opportunity and will no longer be able to avail of this. • The upgrade of the Maguire’s field will benefit the Archery club as it will allow us to shoot outdoors in typical Irish weather because at the moment it is unusable after the heavy rainfall all winter. • Over 12 years ago there was a referendum to build a boat house. The students voted yes. As a result We All Benefited from this and got the Chance to Try out its facilities if we wanted in our time at the University of Limerick. I feel we have a right to give back to the University in our time here as well. This is my opinion on the Current Referendum. I hope I have made you more aware on the project and can understand why I am asking people to vote Yes! #ULRef #GetInformed #WeAreVotingYes This is the link to the referendum on the UL Wolves website ulwolves.ie/referendum2014/
