Hi Friends, I am totally upset and a touch angry at the incredible lack of compassion that the death of Gough Whitlam has brought out in certain parts of the media and politics. Gough was a person and has children and a family, hes not a target for the current political climate to rain on. For the betterment of their POV. Christopher Pyne, your mother was obviously not very well brought up.. if she was crying tears of joy - she wasnt in a detention centre or living in a refuge that has had its funding cut by you or your govt. Alan Jones, you really need to do something about your memory, it was under Whitlam the school you worked at received a boost financially under the education policies of Labour - you would never have made it to the UK where you were arrested in a public toilet without labour created education policies. Australia became a proud nation, a place where amazing things were possible, in sport, art, science and business. Our identity was forged from this. Gough was generous of intellect and never put a person down, above politics and negativity. Our country needs someone like him right now. Not all these inauthentic men who are more faceless than those they have berated in the past. Gough was to me the grandfather of the arts, a benefactor of the highest order the one I have never had the chance to thank but with his Oz Council I was the grateful recipient of several residencies which got me on my way. I owe a debt of gratitude and continue to create music in repayment. Flourish seems too small a word to describe the arts scene when I was starting out in the mid 70s but it was going off and we were staying home to make more of it and to enrich the country. We were a developing nation and our creativity was burgeoning with it. We didnt leave for some far flung place to learn or create we stayed at home. Thanks to him and his amazing legacy well all fight on and certainly one day well end the disdain for all the great things he left us. Comrade - I salute you.
