Hi Friends, Yesterday was a Banner Day for Greater Sudbury. It was the day we cut the ribbon to open the first School of Architecture and Design in 41 years at Laurentian University in Downtown Sudbury. This was a culmination of a vision combined with commitment and a lot of detailed work by our fellow citizens over the last five years. As I stood there listening to the speakers it seemed like it was just yesterday that I had accompanied David, Blaine, Tim, Derek and Ian Wood, my then Chief of Staff, to Cambridge to meet with the folks there who had transitted the School of Architecture from Waterloo to Cambridge. In that particular case those folks converted an old silk factory into the School of Architecture, while in our case we were able to convert a CPR facility into our School of Architecture and Design. We were able to discuss and see the changes downtown campus had wrought on the core of the City of Cambridge. On our return to Greater Sudbury a formal committee was formed and real hard work was undertaken under the leadership of Blaine Nicholls. As a result of the Committee’s recommendation City Council unanimously voted to invest 10 million dollars for the capital cost for the School of Architecture and Design to be located in Downtown Sudbury. How significant and bold was that decision! Because, at the same time we were pursuing a performing arts centre and a multi-use recreational facility. I heartily congratulate our 2006-2010 Council for their willingness to grasp the big picture and move our community forward. I also want to congratulate and thank all the citizens who worked on committees and sub-committees to complete the vision. Wow!
