Hi Guys..only 2 days left until Survival of the Fittest so here is a bit of advice.... 1. CLOTHING - DO NOT WEAR COTTON or FLEECE. Any clothing that retains water will become heavy and cold and weigh you down. Go for sweat wicking and light clothing that is quick drying. I tend to wear shorts with under compression shorts, a under compression wicking top and then my vest. It is up to you if you want to wear gloves but from experience they just become wet, muddy and floppy and have no benefit when trying to climb over obstacles. Save them for warming up your hands afer the event. Your trainers will get wet and muddy but try not to wear an old pair that have no grip or support, you will slide all over the place and risk injury. Ensure you bring an old towel and change of dy, warm clothes for after the event..the cold will hit you hard and you will want to warm up quickly. 2. FOOD - Make sure you have eaten a decent breakfast. If you are hungry and tired during the event you will struggle and will feel the cold more.. Porridge for me every time ! Scrambled or poached egg with granary toast are also a winner. Try not to drink the night before as this will dehydrate you. Use friday as a day to bulk on carbs - My Friday is usually Porridge for breakfast, Ham pasta for lunch and Tuna rice in the evening.. Make sur you eat straight after the event... this will refuel your body and help you recover quicker ! Drink atleast 1/2 a litre of water before the event ! 3. THE RACE - Remember it is just for fun, enjoy yourselves, attempt the obstacles and dont try anything you feel uncomfortable with. When approaching an obstacle try not to stop...use the momentum of the run to get up and over the obstacle. Stopping beforehand you will have to use your own strength to pull you over instead. This is why we do alot of explosive power moves at GMF such as Squat jumps and Power throw down. Remember it is a middle distance run rather than a sprint, take it steady and maintain a steady pace throughout rather than heading off too fast. When leaving the canal dips get moving straight away - If you stop you will get cold and stiff and find things alot harder..Get straight back into it. DO THE WARM UP - They will do a warm up at the start like we do at GMF, this will help prepare you for what lays ahead. Finally, just enjoy it and have fun...you will get a great sense of self pride and achievement afterwards (well you will once you have warmed up, eaten and got over the bruises and bumps ;-) ) Any questions just ask.. Andy :-)
