Hi all - just thought I would share my thoughts on the recent Barbergeddon winding its way through the pages of the internet. I have thought a lot about this issue and took in some interesting perspectives from an episode of CBCs Tapestry on Religious Freedoms & Equality Rights (from Jan 24th 2014), which was exploring similar issues of a persons equality rights vs another persons religious freedom rights - not exactly the same, but parallel enough to shed some light on the matter for me. In the show, the point of view was presented that if the person could satisfy their own needs in a straightforward way, then this was preferable to forcing another group to do what they felt was the correct action. In this case, I interpret this to mean that if there was another way to easily obtain the same haircut, then the most expedient way to solve the issue was to simply take this action at another hair cutting establishment. The view was also put forward that in some cases the point of the actual issue at hand (getting ones hair cut), becomes lost in the battle to defend a theoretical point - In this case, you get a lot of casualties with minimal positive results. As for my own feelings on this issue, I think that it could have been handled a lot more personally, without involving so many people on sides - as soon as one group feels attacked, then the narrative is only going to be about who can win. From the heat Evie has been taking, Im thinking she probably isnt feeling very good about this whole situation - as well, Im pretty the sure the RAB guys are wishing this had never happened Now I think that a whole lot of people within our community who are scrapping it out on this issue, largely agree on many points, but the way this has unfolded has made enemies of friends (or at least raised bad feelings between fairly like minded folks) and made people focus on how they dis-agree with their neighbours. I would suggest that if we are really going to make positive change, then there needs to be more co-operation, communication and insightful thinking, and less us vs them framing of the situations at hand. I think we have a very special and strong community of caring, talented and insightful people here in Regina - I for one would like to find ways to work together to build on what we have - the secret cool spot of Canada - we are doing pretty great for a lame spot on the #1 Love to all Orion
