Hi all, Im Ramya working in a renowned IT company and also running an online shop named QuillMall in Facebook. Quillmall is the shop for handcrafted quilling earrings. I came from a middle class family in Trichy (Tamil Nadu). My grandfather was a freedom fighter and was in Azad Hind Fauj, the army of Great Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and he kept his name for my father. After my father retired from his govt. job we were surviving on his pension, which was not enough for our living, so I decided to take up a job to make some of his burden light. I moved to Chennai in 2009 and got a small job and had been living in an inexpensive girls hostel. During that very period I learnt a lot about life, but I struggled and fought with the situation as I had decided to achieve my mission. During my school days, I was very creative minded, making toys and other handcrafted things from used items. Many times I was admired by my friends for that hobby. Later in 2012 I got an attractive job in an IT company but I never gave up my interests in making handcrafted items. On last Diwali, my office conducted an event where interested employees can open up stalls and sell their products to all employees. The amount raised was contributed to the orphanage children to make them celebrate Diwali happily. I came up with these quilling earrings and opened the stall. We were one of the top selling stalls during that event. After the successful event, my friends started asking me for earrings. Then it was extended to their friends circle. One of my friends had newly opened a shopping website and asked my interest in selling my products in his site. I accepted his request and my passion for quilling turned into business slowly. In the beginning I started selling my earrings, necklaces through Facebook and some web portals like Crafts Villa, and I was getting good responses and my business was growing, not as big as I was thinking but it was good though. My aim was higher; intention was to do bigger in this field. I made a lot of research in marketing and started communicating to the exporters in Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai and Varanasi and started sending samples to them and after trying hard in or about 6 months, I got few bulk orders from 3 exporters worth handsome amounts, It was a major turning point in my business. I travel 2 hrs for office everyday and 10 hrs of stressful work. After returning to hostel, I utilize my leisure time fully in making earrings. I worked hard for one month without proper sleep and food to finish that bulk orders alone. I came from middle class family who always dreamed about reaching good financial status. So I wanted to take up the opportunity which was given and use it properly. Not only my exporters but their overseas clients also liked my work, and they praised our quality, workmanship and materials. Now there is more chance that I will be getting repeat orders from them. In the beginning I was doing it all by myself but now I have a team of 16 skilled workers who can face the challenges of any big order. I have been mobilizing my full efforts to contact the exporters in different places and showing my stuff, and will be trying my level best to boost up my home business. But some points, I would like to share with the people in this group, specially choosing right carrier. To my sheer bad luck, while sending one parcel to an exporter in last month by a reputed courier, someone stole most of the earrings worth Rs, 11000. I was almost down. Apart from money, it was my hard work.. I tried to get refund. But none responded properly. After this incident, I am looking for a suitable and responsible courier. Hope someone in this group will suggest me whom to use as I have come across a lot of poor reviews about other couriers too. At last, I would like to say, if you have faith in yourself and if you think that you can do better and your artwork is the best, certainly success is not far away from you.
