Hi all, This Thursday at the regular time and place (6 PM room P-131 Math Building), we will have a talk by Shalin Parekh on random walks and Brownian motions. Please find the title and abstract at the end of this email. FYI: 1. The 36th annual Virginia Tech Regional Mathematics Contest will be held on October 25, 2014 (Saturday) from 9 AM to 11:30 AM. If you are interested, please email Prof. Moira Chas at [email protected] . For more information, please visit math.vt.edu/people/plinnell/Vtregional/ 2. Macaulay Honors Colleges Undergraduate Math Research Symposium will be held on November 23 (Sunday) from 1 PM to 5 PM. If you are interested in attending, please email Prof. Moira Chas at [email protected] . For more information, please see the flyer at goo.gl/t8hpWH More information on Thursdays talk: Title: Introduction to Random Walks and Brownian Motion Abstract: Imagine that a particle starts at the origin and then moves one unit to the left with probability 1/2 or to the right with probability 1/2. Then, starting from where it left off, it moves again (one unit) in either direction with equal probability. The particle continues doing this forever. This is called a one-dimensional random walk. As it turns out, there is a 100% chance that the particle will return to its starting point. One can consider a similar problem in three dimensions, where the particle moves in any of the six coordinate directions with equal probability, but it turns out that in this case there is positive probability of not returning to the origin! These processes are discrete in nature, but one can also consider the continuous-time analog of these processes, which is called a Brownian Motion and has even more interesting properties. See you on Thursday.
