Hi all! Today is Ash Wednesday, and I thought I would explain what - TopicsExpress

Hi all! Today is Ash Wednesday, and I thought I would explain what this means in my tradition. The day before today is known by a few names, Shrove Tuesday, Pancake Day, even Fat Tuesday! This translates as Mardi Gras! It is not the only word either that comes from this period. As the Tuesday was the day you finished the excess meat you had before fasting began, the word carnevale or farewell meat was developed. In the Uk one would make pancakes to deal with excess eggs and flour. And then, on Ash Wednesday, Lent begins. The imposition of the Ashes, as you can see below, involves a ceremony where ashes, made from the palm leaf crosses made at Palm Sunday the year before and kept, are placed on your forehead. And so begins a time of reflection, perhaps self denial, alms giving and learning. For all who tred my path, I hope today was moving and inspiring, for those who walk other paths, this is why you will see us walking around with dirty smudges today! Pax and blessings!
