Hi, everyone. As a part of organizing my acting career Im going to be opening my improv comedy and acting company, Short Round, in Miami. I dont pretend to be a great teacher of improv and acting, but I do know some, and were going to start by re-establishing something that I always loved that doesnt exist in South Florida anymore, which is a walk-in, drop-in, no-commitment Thursday-night improve/acting workshop by my acting teacher/mentor Gerald Owens, who will be one of the teachers in residence for the group. Gerrys affordable, always-present Thursday night classes were how I became an actor, period. And Im just one of numerous working actors and improv companies that have sprung from his teaching. And Ive long wanted that to exist again for others so their artistic dreams could start coming true or be honed, as mine thankfully have. So, Im glad to have the chance to start them up again. Actors/improvisers or just plain people of all skill levels are welcome. The class will adapt to fit those who attend. The emphasis will be on skill-building and artistic expression. Honing your acting skills. It will be in Miami Lakes and it will be $15 bucks to start. Please join in as you want to. I can tell you one thing, Gerry creates working actors. I went from a non-actor taking the class for stress relief to a working actor booking national work within two years thanks to him. Well also have other local actors/teachers/leaders of the improve scene join in and lead workshops, and Ill probably take a stab or two myself. This is a place for you to come and work on stuff. A no pressure place to see if you like to do this stuff. Or to see how you can do it better. Mentoring will also be a part of it, to help you really get your acting career rolling. South Florida is a great place to become an actor and get your union card before taking your stab at New York or LA, and we can help you out toward that. Or, if youre just looking for a creative outlet or to spread your wings artistically, improvised acting is a great release. Come give it a shot. If you are just visiting South Florida, consider this your artistic home away from home. Gerry and I are both members of various other local improve troupes, and the emphasis right now will not be on performing live shows. Though if someone springs forth from the class that we want to put up, theres always that possibility, of course. But there are plenty of great places to play around town, and we can refer you to pretty much all of them, because we play there, too. This group does not supersede any of the existing groups or shows in Miami or Pittsburgh or elsewhere. It seeks to exist alongside them. And to help bolster them, by giving you a place to work on your chops, to have a place to play with everyone, from everywhere when you feel like it, and to have a place where you can seriously discuss your art and progress as an actor and get some tips and feedback on it. Well also do some goofy, funny crap, too. Dont worry. The goal, my friends, is for everyone to be famous, and successful, and paying their bills with, and being fulfilled by their work. And its possible if we work on it together. But Short Round will be gearing up to produce more media projects on a national scope, so actors from around the country, please be ready.
