Hi everyone, I just want to preface this post by saying that I really hope this doesn’t upset anyone that is going through this with their rottie right now. I’m trying to make sure the people in this position are aware of the Rottweiler Osteosarcoma Project and of the impact they could have on it, if they chose to. Hopefully the people that know me in the rottie world know that this all this has stemmed from me losing my first rottie Kiza, and that I’m fighting to try and make it so that in the future fewer Rottweiler dies from bone cancer and that fewer owners are having to watch their best friend deteriorate. I am very passionate about our breed and have worked hard researching this disease and I am desperately trying to find a way to fight back against osteosarcoma– but I can’t possibly do that without you guys and your Rottweilers. The swabs have hit a peak and at present there are no more swabs left for healthy Rottweilers. My supervisor is looking into some potential funding sources for more boxes. I do have a small reserve left for anyone that has a Rottweiler with bone cancer that needs a swab. The reason for this post is basically, I’ve seen a lot of people on the various rottie sites posting that their dog has unfortunately been diagnosed or the vet suspects they have bone cancer. The next stage of our project is trying to gain information from the tumours themselves. We want to analyse them to find out why they developed, how their clinical progression differs from other forms of cancer and how they differ in their response to treatment. I know that this is a very sensitive thing to talk about and also that a sample from a Rottweiler will have no immediate benefit to your dog, however the information that we gain from it will enable us to help dogs affected with bone cancer in the future. I would like to ask any owners that are having any samples taken for diagnosis if they will consider letting us have a part of that sample for the Rottweiler Osteosarcoma Project. We would not need an additional sample from your dog, we would just use a portion taken for the diagnosis. If any owners are going down the amputation route and the area affected is being removed anyway, I would be really grateful if you would allow a sample from that amputation to be included. Finally, if the osteosarcoma is obvious and didn’t need any diagnostics and you are not going down the amputation route, I would just like you to consider, when you have to make that call and take your baby to the vets, if after they have passed you would allow a sample to be taken then. I appreciate this isn’t a pleasant thing to think about when you are already dealing with so much already, but samples from osteosarcoma dogs are paramount to us finding a better defence against treating future dogs that have osteosarcoma. At present, the majority of dogs (9/10) regardless of what treatment is undertaken lose their battle with osteosarcoma within a year. These are horrendous figures and I just want to find a way to fight back. So if anyone who has a Rottweiler with osteosarcoma would just consider doing this, I would be in your debt. You and your Rotteiler would be doing an amazing thing for the future health of our breed. All you need to do if you are considering this is to message myself or my supervisor Dr Mark Dunning [email protected] and we can get a special sample pot sent out to your vets. Thank you so much for reading this post and I truly hope I haven’t upset anyone. These dogs that are suffering with this disease have the chance to change the breed’s future and I hope you will consider this. Thank you, Shareen, Kiza and Riken
