Hi everyone, welcome to our weekly market report - your tool to running a successful kitchen/business. No ground breaking news for this week, changes are only marginal. THE WEEK THAT WAS: A few windy days, flash flooding and peak prices for tomatoes felt pretty harsh… but with New Season Asparagus, and beautiful spring weekend weather it’s all going to be fine. ⛅LATEST WEATHER NEWS: VIC & SA will have less rain this week with temperatures up on last week. Hopefully this will help with the SA cucumber crisis. NSW & QLD will also have less rain and warmer days helping fruit up north flourish. BIGGEST RISES: ***Tomatoes*** - certainly still expensive, but price has dropped a little. Until our local tomatoes begin, prices will be high (all tomatoes are from QLD and WA). ***Roma tomatoes*** - same trend as round tomatoes, price peaked last week, and easing a little this week. ***Cucumbers*** - remain high. SA still not producing enough is keeping prices up. I do believe that they will begin to ease a little next week. Lebanese cucumbers are also in the same predicament. ***Avocados*** - small amounts from all directions. NZ still dominating, and finally our first lot of WA fruit has landed. However, not enough to ease the price. Possibly a small drop in price within a couple of weeks as WA picks up momentum. ***Red capsicums*** - still up in price even with the introduction of new season SA glasshouse stock which are superb. Im hoping with the release of SA caps the market price will ease within weeks. ***Raspberries & figs*** - premium quality with premium prices. Quantity still not available, leaving these two lines high in price. WHATS CHEAP: ***Cauliflower & broccoli*** - of the two, broccoli certainly is still stuck at the bottom. I believe broccoli has hit rock bottom, and will slowly climb back up in price from this point. ***Tuscan cabbage and kale*** - still plentiful and performing wonderfully at the moment. Local growers are all creating a final dash before spring kicks in, and supply slows right down. Note: quantities will be good for the next two weeks. ***Jerusalem artichokes, kohlrabi, turnips, swedes & celeriac*** - still growing well despite the change of season. Demand is slowing on these lines keeping their prices down. As spring weather warms up, the quality and price does change on these lines. ***Eggplant*** - still cheap, and coming from up north in abundance. Lebanese variety also fairly priced. ***Baby veg*** - all vibrant and improved in size. Dutch carrots: purple, white, golden, and orange are all growing well and local. Beetroots: golden, purple, and candy stripe all showing good size and quantities for early spring. Radish: heirloom, French, and red are all performing fantastically. Baby leeks are also great quality. ***Snow peas*** - coming from north, great quality, and all unaffected by weather leaving them at a fantastic price. Highly recommended! ***Beans*** - price down on last week. Warmer QLD weather creating a surge in fresh beans. Great quality and price. ***Oranges (juicing)*** - locally grown, Late Lane from Mildura. Great quality and sweet flavour, perfect for juicing. ***Watermelon, rockmelon & honeydews*** - warmer weather up north and in WA contributing to the influx of fruit bringing the price right down. Smaller sized fruit, in particular, are flooding our market. ***Strawberries*** - QLD and WA both flooding the market. Quantity reflecting price. Quality fair. WHATS HANGING ON: ***Blueberries*** - with Coffs Harbour back on their feet, prices are now steady, but only just. QLD supply will be on their way out shortly. ***Brussels sprouts, fennel and globe artichokes*** - all local and slowing down in growth due to warmer spring weather. Note: this will create a price increase very soon. ***Pumpkin and potatoes*** - potatoes in all varieties are no issue at the moment. Sweet potatoes are in between seasons creating a small price increase. Jap, butternut & grey are all moving into new season creating price variance from old season to new. ***Herbs*** - nearly all good. Local parsley & spring onions are improving by the week. Sage & tarragon are both still a little scarce. All other herbs such as: dill, chives, oregano, marjoram, rosemary, mint, and thyme are showing good signs with better size bunches and quality. ***Sweet Corn*** - with a few more coming down now from QLD, their price will ease. Warmer weather is helping growth. ***Bananas*** - still holding their price and can only come down as quantities improve up north. Weather will dictate the result. ***Pineapples*** - price wise, no issues. However, quality is touch and go. Change of season climate effecting their quality. WHATS NEW: ***Blood oranges*** - prices down, sensational quality. ***Mandarins*** - Afourer & Ellendale varieties are in. Both juicy and sweet. ***Tangelo & Sumo*** - tangelos are a little sour. Sumo are very sweet. ***Mangoes*** - Kensington Pride & R2E2. Both from NT, and great quality this early in season. IMPORTED FRUIT: Available are; nectarines - white & yellow, peaches - white & yellow, grapes - green & red and pomegranates. Note: peaches & nectarines will be ending very shortly. VEG THATS IN: ***New Season Asparagus*** - spring is asparagus! Victorian grown from Koo Wee Rup. Looking like a great season ahead. We have A-grade bunches (large & mini), and quality ungraded asparagus all coming through. Definitely worth appearing in your new spring menu. ***Spring peas*** - another spring vegetable that will ease in price as the spring climate progresses. ***Borlotti beans & broad beans*** - top quality out of QLD. Quantities are picking up and easing prices. ***Purple broccolini*** - just for a colour difference we have purple broccolini. They are arguably sweeter in flavour than the regular green broccolini. ***Zucchini flowers*** - still available from QLD and great quality. ***Heirloom Dutch carrots*** - local and vibrant. All varieties are available. ***Radish*** - all varieties are local, and availability is good. ***Baby beetroots & heirloom baby beets*** - all available and great size. ***Cauliflowers*** - purple & green are available this week. ***Romanesco*** - great quality and locally grown. ***Garlic*** - fresh, in bunches are available (QLD). Packing a punch of flavour! WHATS NOT AVAVAILBLE: ***Slippery Jacks & pine mushrooms*** - still no sign of these beautiful bad boys coming through. However, we hope they will make an appearance by the end of the month. ***Apricots, plums & feijoas*** - all out of season. ***Cherries*** - Californian season now finished. We will not see cherries until November and they will be Australian. FINAL NOTE: ***Tomatoes*** - still high, but peaked out ***Cucumbers*** - waiting for good news... ***Avocadoes*** - majority NZ, but W.A has began ***Strawberries*** - quantity reflecting price ***Broccoli & cauliflower*** - bottomed out ***Beans*** flooding the market ***Asparagus*** - all local, and in season (see previous post for picture: https://facebook/bivianodirect/photos/a.255871264623160.1073741828.255607637982856/272905366253083/?type=1&theater ).
