Hi folks, hope you had a good weekend. Just a quick sum up of the week gone. The email campaign was stepped up a notch and further pressure was brought to bear on our TDS and Senators. In the two day Dail debate on the finance bill, our issue was strongly highlighted by a number of TDs and our letters were quoted on a number of occasions. The government confirmed that they were tabling an amendment to allow the credit to be transferred in cases where the primary carer has no tax liability. We argued back that this was not going to prevent discrimination or financial loss and was not workable. See Drum Stig posted reply - may I suggest that we use this as a standard reply to any standard Government responses from now on? The finance bill will now go to committee for further discussion/amendment. Once passed here, thats probably it. It will go to the seanad for debate but, whilst they can make recommendations, they cant insist on change. The upshot is that this is a crucial week especially the first three or four days. Ive been looking into the committee members and think about should target them on an individual basis, so Ill get some emails up tomorrow along with the email addresses of the members. Other things to note; The Petition is still up and we have 140 sigs now, we do have nearly 400 friends though so please keep sharing & encouraging. The idea is to lodge the petition on Friday. I have posted up a second draft of the submission to the Constitutional Convention and it appears to be well received. I think we should send that through this week - you might let me know if one submission on behalf of the group is ok or if you think we should reach make an individual submission? In the interim, I have found some very interesting stuff on labors manifesto and proposed bills which places them in an awkward situation Ill use this as the basis of the mail to the labour TDs on the committee - we will need to swing one or two. Ill need some volunteers to mail/call [email protected] and make representations to him on the issue. He sits on the committee and has been silent so far - his website highlights the work he has done on equality for women in employment so he should be open to hearing us out. Ill also keep working on further press coverage and see if we can get this issue kept in the public eye. Thats all for now folks. Thanks for the hard work and support and lets keep the momentum for the next few days. Ill post up some mails tomorrow.
