Hi friends! Tis the season to be merry and I am once again fundraising to take my wonderful students to a Latin American restaurant! As some of you know, I am currently teaching in southeast Washington, DC at a school that is considered 99.9% black. Many of my students qualify for free/reduced lunch and many have spent their entire lives in DC, but have never left their neighborhood. Last time we took our students to Cuba Libre, I asked a group of my students to compare what they just ate to what they normally eat. Their responses still shock me to this day. The first response was, What we eat is shit, and this is good! This was followed by another student commenting on how good the plain white rice tasted and proceeded to get an entire plates worth of the plain white rice. My students are so used to eating bags of chips, cookies, and candy as meals that when they are presented with what we may consider a basic side dish, they view it as fancy meal.
