Hi guys, Apologies for the delays between posts ( we still got day jobs ). :-) Anyway, its still Nutrition Tuesday. :-) And aside from featuring a particular food or diet, well try to discuss one of the THE most anabolic hormones in the body. No, its not testosterone or HGH. Definitely NOT steroids. Its Insulin! But wait? Isnt that what diabetics inject themselves with? Yes, but this versatile hormone does way more than just regulate blood sugar. Aside from carbohydrate, Insulin is also involved in lipid (fat) metabolism. It also facilitates the uptake of glucose, amino acids (building blocks of protein), and creatine, aiding muscle repair and growth. Insulin levels spike up when we eat carbohydrates, so its a good idea to have some simple carbs right after your workout ( together with your protein ). For the rest of the day, favor complex carbohydrates. Another way is to supplement with food that acts like insulin in the body. Enter the lowly ampalaya (bitter gourd or bitter melon). Ingredients in the fruit/vegetable has a similar effect s insulin in regulating blood sugar level and controlling uptake of nutrients. If youre really serious enough and got the budget, you can also supplement with alha lipoic acid (ALA). ( NEVER try to supplement with pure insulin unless its a part of your treatment for diabetes. You run the risk of going into diabetic shock, where your blood sugar gets so low that it starves the brain and induce a coma. ) Bottomline, be smart in choosing the carbs that you eat the whole day. Get more fiber in your diet so you dont increase your insulin at the wrong times. I need to relearn to eat ampalaya too. :-) Hope you learned something new that you can use to reach your fitness goals. Below is a list of the sources for the information in this article.
