Hi there! If anyone is going to the Drivers Licence Center to get their licence, or get it renewed, I have some information about an additional 交通安全協会 ・ KoutsuuAnzenKyoukai fee they are keen to tag on. Its basically for a safety drive members card (aye, more wallet padding) which entitles you to some discounts for the duration of your licence. It costs 500円 for each year of your new licence. Eg.3 year licence = once off payment of 1,500円. This is on top of the regular licence fee and handling fee so when you go to pay (for renewals it was after the eye-test) and the total cost is higher than expected this is most likely what theyre adding on. In fairness, they do at least say something along the lines of, 交通安全協会のご協力をお願いします... We thank you in advance for your cooperation! before quoting the *new* total, but I just thought Id mention it here so people know what it is. If you dont want/need it just put enough for the basic licence fee on the counter and, if pressed, tell them thats all you have. If the crowds are anything like they were when I was there they wont have time to blink over it; though the more seasoned/snotty clerks may actually find time to give you the stink eye! If youre interested in seeing what discounts and participating businesses you can flash the card at, look here: kyosan-k-ankyo (協賛店一覧) Maybe youll find your favorite onsen or izakaya (yep!) in there or reckon that the shaken deals or 30% off an oil change are worth it, but either way you dont have to buy into it.
