Hia Everyone! :) Next month I will be joining my brother and sister in a 14,000ft skydive with the hope of raising money for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. This is an amazing charity that is trying to find a cure for those suffering with Type 1 Diabetes; an incurable and life threatening condition that my little brother has lived with since the age of 12. Calum now has to give himself daily injections and finger prick blood tests, has a restricted diet, attends numerous hospital check ups, and wears an insulin pump 24/7 just to keep him alive. A large number of the general public confuse Type 1 diabetes with Type 2 (which can be controlled through diet). A child diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes aged five faces 19,000 injections by the time they are 18 years old. That same child may have pricked their finger to draw blood 50,000 times. Managing Type 1 diabetes means making sophisticated calculations of carbohydrate eaten, exercise taken or planned, blood glucose levels and insulin needed, followed by an injection or infusion, just to eat a meal or snack. It also means managing the devastating effects of high blood glucose (hyperglycaemia) and low blood glucose (hypoglycaemia).
