I am sure you have good intentions with your choice of breakfast cereal but read the label and you will be shocked at the ingredients of most cereals that seem healthy at first glance. DON’T FALL FOR THE MARKETING TRICKS used by breakfast cereal companies. What to look for in a breakfast cereal: - Watch out for cereals that have added fruit, as these are usually low-fiber, refined-grain cereals. It is a better option to toss in your own fresh fruits to high-fiber cereals. - Choose low GI (glycemic index) cereals - No artificial sweeteners - No high fructose corn syrup EITHER (1) At least 20% of their carbohydrate grams as fiber with less sugar than fiber. E.g. a cereal with 20g of carbohydrate/serving would have at least 4g of fiber, LESS THAN 4g of sugar. OR (2) At least 15% of carbohydrate as fiber with NO or very little sugar (less than 8g sugar/100g). E.g. choose pure grains or oats. Do you get hungry not long after breakfast? Eating only cereal with milk, (even if it is whole grain cereal) puts ALOT of carbohydrate into your body, FAST. This will result in lower energy and greater hunger about 1-2 hours after breakfast as well as HIGHER BODY FAT LEVELS. Add a healthy fat source (e.g. almonds) and a good protein source (e.g. milk, soy milk) and high fiber fruit or LSA mix to your cereal to slow the digestive process – leaving you fuller for longer!
