High Voltage Prayer Blog - 30 Day Prayer Challenge Day 14, October 12, 2014 “Make me walk along the path of your commands, for that is where my happiness is found.” Psalm 119:35 We have a beautiful black cat. Julianne picked him out at the Humane Society 5 years ago. His name is Rascal. It’s a fitting name. Rascal is a sweet cat usually. When he gets tired of attention though, he gets nasty without warning, at which point I get nasty without warning right back – especially if he lashes out at Esther. I have told Esther that Rascal can become a “little pig” sometimes. We don’t like to have the animals in the house but there have been plenty of times when he has snuck in underneath armloads of groceries and we’ve found him later, asleep on a bed. The other day, I walked outside to make a quick run to the store. Rascal was on our screened in back porch asleep on a chair. I saw him, but it didn’t register to me until I stepped out into the driveway and there he was again. Huh? “That’s not Rascal!” Julianne came running. Sure enough, there was a cat in our driveway that looked just like Rascal. Except for two minor details, this other black cat looks identical to him. They even run the same. I know this because Rascal chased him off – quite a nasty little altercation. After a little research, we found out that this other cat belongs to a neighbor. Ironically, his name is “Pig.” I wonder how many times I thought it was Rascal sleeping on a bed and it was Pig. Emily came up with an analogy a few years ago. She said that if you have 2 sticks—one slightly bent and the other twisted like a pretzel—the slightly bent stick is more dangerous. It is self-evident that the twisted-up stick is no use. But if you have a slightly bent stick without a perfectly straight stick as a standard, you will be more willing to trust it like it is straight. Do you remember the serpent in the garden? He made Eve question whether she understood exactly what God had said. If the serpent told her flat-out that God was a liar, he would have revealed his twistedness. But he engaged with her first, thereby getting a secure place in her thoughts. Then he made her question what God meant by asking her what He said. “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” Once he got her to rely on her own understanding, instead of what God clearly said to her, he essentially latched onto her jugulars…and mine…and yours. It matters a great deal that you read the Word of God daily, lining up what you are hearing all around you with what He is saying. His Word is the straight stick against which all others are to be measured. Being led astray happens one tiny step at a time. If you don’t have a willing heart, ask Him to give you one. Slightly bent sticks are popping up everywhere these days. Scripture of the Day: “But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow their depraved conduct and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. In their greed these teachers will exploit you with fabricated stories. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping.” (2 Peter 2) Song of the Day: Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus, by Nichole Nordeman https://youtube/watch?v=bBfHUrLGzNY A current example of a slightly bent stick: https://youtube/watch?v=00-6OyXVA0M
