Highlighting Native American art here in Western North Carolina, while teaching about their culture. Tuesday, the Asheville Chamber of Commerce hosted a Native Marketplace, featuring a group of contemporary Cherokee artists. Along with artwork, craftsmen also held demonstrations. Betty Maney learned how to weave baskets from her mother, who learned from Bettys paternal grandmother. She says exposure like this is vital to preserving the past. Plus to pass it on to people who are willing to learn, to teach because it keeps the history of the Cherokee alive and its a live documentation of the process as well as the oral history, says Maney. The Native Marketplace was coordinated by Our Native American Business Network and the Asheville Chamber of Commerce, with help from the Sequoyah Fund.
