Highlights of Good Morning Sierra Leone Program on Radio Democracy F.M. 98.1-Thursday 27th February,2014 SLPP Member of Parliament for Constituency 17, Kenema District,Hon Habib Munda on the petition against the Minority Leader, Hon Dr Bernadette Lahai • The Minority Leader should see reason and step down as she is representing the party in Parliament • The court injunction is to prevent the party from conducting an election to replace her • She should not depend on any another reason to stay put but the party • Democracy is under serious threat as the opposition has lost focus and its responsibility in Parliament to the people, the state and the party • Dr Lahai always says she was not given the opportunity to defend herself that is not the case • The party advised that the two sides in the conflict should not grant interviews to the press-the next day the Minority Leader was in the media • Against the advice of the party, she has made changes in the Parliamentary Oversight Committees, changed the SLPP representative at the ECOWAS Parliament and she seconded the nomination of the Speaker of Parliament contrary to the position of the party • She has continued to use the APC to dehumanise the SLPP • On the day the court order was read in Parliament, APC MPs jubilated and displayed the photographs of Dr Lahai • She has continued to flout the party Constitution with impunity • The SLPP leadership in Parliament has collapsed-there is a parallel administration in Parliament • The Chairman/Leader of the party is responsible for the impasse Hon Shiabu Koromao f the SLPP representing Bo District on the same issue • Want to appeal to all stakeholders in the conflict to ceasefire • Dissociated himself from the petitioners • The massage diplomacy failed–the issue has got out of hand resulting to a court action • The party should focus on important national issues like this year’s census • The Minority Leader is competent and hard working • The petition process is wrong • All the actions of the Minority Leader came after the petition • The party has a lot of issues to resolve • Members should put the past behind them • Somebody is stage-managing the issue Leader/Chairman of the SLPP, Chief Somano Kapenon the same issue • Shocked that the two MPs are engaged in a diatribe in the media • The two have reduced the credibility of the party to ridicule • The position of the party is very clear with regards the Minority Leader • The issue was handled very well • The court injunction states that the Minority Leader should continue in office • Will instruct the SLPP Secretary General to inform the Minority Whip in Parliament to discipline MPs who violate the party rules • Some MPs are reducing the winning chances of the party in the next election Station reporter on the visit by the Vice President to Statistics Sierra Leone (SSL) on 26th February 2014 • The census will be conducted in December this year • This is the first time for a seating VP to visit the institution • The VP advised that staff should not be recruited from their localities • That the institution should concentrate on collecting data on the socio-economic, extractive industries, education, the housing sector and agriculture activities of the country to be interpreted accordingly • That the perimeter of the census should be internationally acceptable • That reliable data will help the country to plan better • That Government knows the importance of the institution and will give it full support • The management of SSL revealed that the census will cost Le35.45 billion out of which Government is contributing Le16.7 million and UNDP Le1.29 but that there is a funding gap • That the cartographic work has commenced • Assured the VP that the census will be credible • That the Demographic and Health Survey that will be launched in April this year provides reliable data on the health sector
