Highway road counts show why traffic jams along Hwy 75 and the Creek Turnpike are increasing Published Aug. 1, 2014 Since 1990, Glenpool’s population has increased 73 percent, from 6,688 to 11,617 as of 2013. With that growth has come the four-lane divided Highway 75 and the addition of the Creek Turnpike. The Department of Transportation does its best to forecast and build for the future. However, drivers on Highway 75 sitting at the traffic lights at 141st Street in the morning and evening may not think that they have done enough to meet that need. A look at the traffic counts on Highway 75 and the Creek Turnpike clearly show exceptional growth even in the past three years. According to the State Transportation Department, the average daily traffic count on Highway 75 taken just south of 151st Street was 23,700 vehicles in the most recent count. On Highway 75 just north of the Creek Turnpike that daily count is 46,700 vehicles per day. Also of interest is that on Highway 117 just west of Highway 75, the traffic count is 11,800 vehicles per day reflecting the retail growth in that area,. Just to the east of Highway 75 on 151st Street, the traffic count is 7,400 vehicles per day. Also of interest is the effect that road construction has had on the Creek Turnpike. The addition of extra lanes took nearly two years to complete and traffic was slowed and detoured during that time. On the Creek Turnpike at the Highway 75 intersection, the east bound traffic count actually declined every year from 2011 to 2013. In 2011 the east bound count was 10,837 on an average daily count compared to 10,722 in 2012 and 10,212 in 2013. That number is expected to be higher now that construction is completed. On the west bound traffic lanes the count was 10,758 in 2011, 10,493 in 2012 and 10,071 in 2013. A comparable decline is true for other major intersections along the Creek Turnpike. A portion of this decline might be attributable to the economy, but in general the decline is thought to be more influenced by the construction. The Peoria exit west bound count was 16,131 in 2011 compared to 16,733 in 2012 and 16,562 in 2013. The eastbound count was 16,154 in 2011 compared to 16,965 in 2012 and 16,731 in 2013. The Riverside exit westbound count was 21,447 in 2011 compared to 21,952 in 2012 and 25,298 in 2013. On the eastbound lanes, the 2011 count was 21,121 compared to 21,848 in 2012 and 25,895 in 2013. On the west side of Highway 75 and the Creek Turnpike the Sapulpa Exit has a westbound count of 7,823 in 2011 with 7,629 in 2012 and 7,310 in 2013. On the eastbound lanes the count was 7,864 in 2011 compared to 7,809 in 2012 and 7,349 in 2013.
