Hind Shoufani is Palestinian filmmaker and writer. She has lived in many cities in the Middle East and was a Fulbright scholar to NYC where she completed an MFA in film directing at NYU. Since 2007, she has performed her poetry at the Frankfurt book fair, in the Berlin poetry festival and in the Pittsburgh City of Asylum Jazz poetry festival, as well as several bars, street corners, cultural centers, dimly lit living rooms, parks and restaurants in the Middle East and the US. Hind is the founder, MC and curator of the Poeticians collective, an elastic group of bold writers who perform monthly. In 2011, she was awarded a 3 month writers residency at the prestigious International Writing Program at Iowa University. She is the author of two books of poetry, titled More Light than Death Could BearandInkstains on the Edge of Light. In 2012, she compiled and edited the first anthology of the Poeticians, Nowhere Near a Damn Rainbow, which contains uncensored writing by 31 poets based in the Middle East. She insists that shes not a real poet, but is compulsively driven to write long often-angry tirades and then subject people to them. Her real job is in film, but she says that her dabbling with poetry as a hobby will probably become a lifelong commitment, a vocation and a communal experience that brings her unrivaled joy, whilst sadly still not paying the rent. Hind is compelled to write about love and loss, with a little lust thrown in. She also tackles issues of home, identity, Palestine, Dubai and Beirut, and the act of writing itself. Shes fascinated with the concept of death, memory and mourning, and they permeate her work as well.
