Historian of Ancient India In 1776,the law book of Manu was translated into English as a Code of Gentoo Law The Asiatic Society of Bengal was setup in 1784 in Calcutta by a civil Servent of the East India Company,Sir William Jones(1746-94),who translated the drama known as the Abhijanshakuntalam ,into English in 1789 The Bhagwadgita ,the most popular religious text of the Hindus ,had been rendered into English by Wilkings in 1785. The Bombay Asiatic Society was setup in 1804,and the Asiatic Society of Great Britain was setup in London in 1823. Early History of India was written by Vincent Arthur Smith(1843-1920) ,who also prepared the first systematic history of ancient India in 1904. Rajendra Lal Mitra wrote a book entitled Indo-Aryans Pandurang Vaman Kane,a Sanskritist weeded to social reform worte the History of the Dharamshastra,published in five volumes in the present century.It is known as an encyclopedia of ancient social laws. RC Majmudar wrote History and Culture of the Indian People. KA Nilakanta Sastri,the historian from South India wrote a History of Ancient India and History of South India KP Jayaswal wrote Hindu Polity and AL Basham wrote Wonder that was India DD Koshambi wrote an Introduction to the Study of Indian History The Mound is an elevated portion of land covering remains of old habitants,Vertical excavation of mound means lengthwise digging to uncover the periodwise sequence of cultures.Horizontal excavatitions means digging the mound as a whole or a major part of it to obtain a complete idea of the site culture in a particular period The Science which enables us to dig the old mounds in systematic layers and to form an idea of the material life of the people is called Archaeology The dates of material remains are fixed according to radiocarbon method which is based on principle that carbon is associated with all living objects.When an object ceases to live,it stops recieving any fresh supply of a particular type of carbon called C14.The existing C14 now undergoes a process of decay which is called which is called the Radioactivity.The Object which contains less C14 proves to be older in age and that which contains more C14 turns out to be younger
