Dr. Asfaw, a heart surgeon living in the Detroit area, in 1997 founded the Ethiopian North American Health Professionals Association (ENAHPA), working towards a goal of building a worldwide network to address the profound healthcare crisis in Ethiopia. The award includes a $50,000 dollar donation for a charity of his choosing and a new Volvo automobile every three years. --- On this date on April 12, 1936, Italy proclaimed that slavery was now officially prohibited in Ethiopia. --- on this date on April 12, 1853, Ethiopia witnessed the Battle of Takusa, fought between the forces of Kassa Hailu--future Emperor of Ethiopia, and an alliance of several rival warlords. The forces of Hailus enemies were led by Dejazmach Birru Aligaz, who was reinforced by troops sent to him by Wube Haile Maryam under the command of his son, Gwangul Wube.
