Historic silver for Sheffield’s Summerhayes in Austria Sheffield’s Katie Summerhayes has made history by winning a silver medal in the freestyle skiing world championships in Austria. The 19-year-old who learned to ski at the city’s dry ski slopes and was a member of the Sheffield Sharks Ski Club, becomes the first British woman to win a medal at world level after claiming silver in the slopestyle final in Kreischberg. It is the biggest achievement of her career and follows a seventh-place finish in the Olympic final in Sochi in 2014. She scored 82.80 points in Wednesday’s final, with Germany’s Lisa Zimmerman taking gold with 85.80 and Slovakia’s Zuzana Stromkova finishing third. Summerhayes, whose sister younger sister Molly is making her world championship debut in the halfpipe, won the world junior slopestyle title last April, just two months after her successful Olympic debut in Russia. Summerhayes said: “I’m really stoked, I stepped up each run the way I wanted to. “It’s taken a lot of hard work to get here and all the girls put on an awesome performance today, it was a great atmosphere out there.” Source: yorkshirepost.co.uk/ leedsinnews/historic-silver-for-sheffields-summerhayes-in-austria/
