Historic tidbits about Ethiopia on this date on June 12 -------------------- --- Today hosts World Day Against Child Labour. --- Today is the birthdate of the late Ethiopian gold medalist Mamo Wolde, born on this date on June 12, 1932 in the town of Dirre Jille. Wolde, who served as an United Nations peacekeeper for Ethiopia in the Korean War in the 1950s,, would become the second Ethiopian and Black African to win a gold medal in the marathon at the 1968 Mexico Olympics. According to the British Telegraph, following the collapse of the Soviet-back Derg Government, Wolde was arrested and jailed on accusations he had participated in the Red Terror campaign---killing a 15 year old boy. Detained for nine years, Wolde was released in 2002, and died a few months later on May 26, 2002 from an undisclosed ailing disease. Wolde was married twice and had three children. --- Today is the birthday of Ethiopian long-distance runner Ayelech Worku, born on this date on June 12, 1979 in Arsi, Oromia. Ayelech began her rising career in running taking silver in the 5000 meter at the 1995 All-Africa Games in Zimbabwe. Worku later winning two World Championships bronz medals on the 5000m in 1999 in Spain and again in 2001 in Canada. --- On this date on June 12, 1940, the Associated Press reported that 200,000 Ethiopian troops, wearing the uniform of former Emperor Haile Selassie, are battling Italians in Fascist occupied Ethiopia. --- On this date on June 12, 1935, the Associated Press reported that Ethiopian officials accused Italian agents today of attempting to buy the support of some chiefs of the Province of Ogaden, across the frontier from Italian Somaliland.
