*Historic tidbits about Ethiopia on this date on June 9) ------------------------ --- On this date on June 9, 1989, Prince Ermias Sahle-Selassie, grandson of HIM Haile Sellassie, and head of the Crown Council of Ethiopia, weds Gelila Fisseha. The obscure Fisseha is the daughter of Afe-Negus Fesseha Gebre-Selassie, one of the chief Justices of the imperial era. Fisseha is also the niece of Dr. Asrat Woldeyes, founder of the All Amhara Peoples Organization--once a popular opposition partyin Ethiopia. They are the parents of twin boys, Christian and Rufael(b. Feb. 20, 1992). In 2003, the couple separated and divorced. Prince Ermias has since remarried to Saba Kebede. The wedding appears timed to correspond to the wedding date of the Prince Ermias Sahle Selassies mother and father , as noted shortly. --- On this date on June 9, 1970, the Associated Press reported that Ethiopia and Kenya formally signed a treaty formally recognizing each others border. --- On this date on June 9, 1968, the Shah of Iran departed from Ethiopia after a six day stay . --- On this date on June 9, 1960, the Canadian Press reported that Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie donated $3,000 to the Manitoba flood relief fund, Canadian Prime Minster St. Laurent reported to the House of Parliament. --- On this date on June 9, 1959, the Reuters news agency reported that Prince Sahle Selassie, youngest son of Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie , had today married Mahisente Habte Mariam. Mahisente is the daughter of Dejazmach Habte Mariam Gebre Igziabiher, heir to the former Welega Kingdom of Leqa Naqamte. --- On this date on June 9, 1954, the Associated Press reported on Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassies tour of the United States that today in a red red convertible through the Minnesota countryside. During a 20 minute stop at the typical farm, the Emperor examined Dotys beef cattle and then went to the house for a quick glass of lemonade and a crisp homemade cookie. --- On this date on June 9, 1937, the New York Times reported that Ethiopian Emperor-in-exile Haile Selassie had reportedly moved to Paris where he intends to sue Italy $1.5 million dollars over the right to sell stock he owns in the French owned-Dibouti-Addis Ababa Railroad. --- On this date on June 9, 1932, the Associated Press reported that the former Emperor Desginate had escaped, and believed to be seeking to build any army to retake the throne.
