(Source: Historical Dictionary of Ethiopia) --- On this day on May 17, 1936, the Associated Press reported that Balahu, the former umbrella carrier for Emperor Haile Selassie, and considered the tallest man in Ethiopia, was executed by an Italian firing squad. Balahu, at seven foot, 5 inches in height, had spent his last days serving as the Imperial band drum lead. The Associated Press said Balahu was discovered by Emperor Haile Selassie in 1934, when he presided over the Supreme Court, and where Balahu was on trial for the murder of a rival in a love affair. The Emperor was so impressed that he paid himself blood money on behalf of Balahu.
