History of the Sacred Dancers of Angkor dance rituals imploring the Gods to bestow their spiritual energy back to the shrines making the temples a spiritual destination before the archaeological vestiges. In the footsteps of their ancestors the Sacred Dancers of Angkor went on a pilgrimage at Wat Phou in Laos for a high dance ritual “ Buong Suong”, where thousands of pilgrims from all over gathered to repent their sins and commemorate Meak Bocchea” Meak Bocchea celebrates the ordainment of Lord Buddha’s first 1250 disciples who spontaneously came to listen to His last sermon when He announced His passing away in the three months to come. Fifty sacred dancers each holding 25 candles remembered the 1250 disciples in a very highly charged and emotional moment, when pilgrims and Monks came to them to light their incenses. In Wat Phou (Laos). To reach the main sanctuary the pilgrims have to climb 7 very steep sets of 11 stairs, symbolising the passing through the 7 Lokas (Worlds) to attain the final enlightenment, leaving the earthly realm to reach the highest abode of the Gods. There, an Apsara is holding her hair showing a knot with it inscribed on a cloth in sanscrit, a divine message in verses of hymns symbolising the breath of life and the bridge to immortality. Our lead dancer also had the message knotted in her hair for the ritual.
