Thank you for forwarding me the message from Facebook, I hope the following statement will go some way to avoiding that experience in future: As part of the Prime Ministers Challenge on Dementia, in September 2013, Alzheimers Society with the support of the government, Local Government Association and civil society launched the dementia friendly communities recognition process. Over the last six months, over 40 communities have joined the recognition process and the ability to use a forget-me-not symbol. This has been adopted as the symbol to denote when someone is a Dementia Friend and where a city, town, village or business is part of a programme to build a Dementia Friendly Community. In some areas, other symbols are used to support and promote dementia awareness. These include the ‘Purple Angel’ and the ‘Butterfly Scheme’. Where these have been chosen as symbols for a particular location, they should sit alongside the forget-me-not thereby contributing to overall efforts to create greater dementia awareness and therefore better support and understanding for people affected by dementia.
