Hmmm. El País takes on gender violence in Spain; there have been 658 women murdered by their male partners in the last ten years. 17 women have been murdered this year. Obviously one murder of any sort is one too many, but Spain is such a non-violent country. 66 victims of gender violence a year, in a country of some 44 million people, is a very low rate. The reason this is such big news is that there are virtually no other murders in Spain. It is so rare here that a murder anywhere in the country makes the national news. Hell, in Kansas City there are several murders a week, and its a metro área of what, a million and a half? Spaniards are often shocked by the American murder rate, which is really not that high compared with some other countries. What they dont quite get is that middle-class people are rarely victims; most murdered people are lower-class, and are usually men. This is why school shootings are such big news: middle-class children are killed. Because of all the publicity, people get the idea they happen all the time, which they dont, and that they only happen in America, which isnt true either, General musing: Im in favor of strict gun control. It seems to work in Spain. I also think that too many of the wrong people are put in prison; sentences should be harsher for violent crimes and less harsh for non-violent crimes. elpais/elpais/2014/03/21/inenglish/1395408904_668688.html
