Hmmm, I like this. And its a lot easier to give things a try and pack in early if you borrow from the library instead of buying... Discounting obvious trash like Jeffrey Archer and Dan Brown, here are a few (more or less) serious novels I couldnt finish: A Glastonbury Romance by John Cowper Powys. Long time ago, cant remember much about it now – which possibly says it all. Gravitys Rainbow, Thomas Pynchon. Utterly incomprehensible. Chocolat, Joanne Harris. Im no fan of the Catholic Church but I hated the way the priest was set up as the bad guy. Dishonest and manipulative. The Reality Dysfunction, Peter F Hamilton. Quite liked some of the earlier, shorter books (e.g. the Greg Mandel series) - nothing special but mildly entertaining. But somewhere along the way serious bloat set in. The Children of Húrin, J R R Tolkien. Yes, LOTR is a masterpiece, but I only just made it through the Silmarillion, and this was a portent too far... Unfinished Tales was exactly that, too. The Magic Mountain, Thomas Mann. Funny, I enjoyed Buddenbrooks, but half way through MM I just lost track of who was who and didnt care anyway. I know thats only 6 but I need to get on with some work... Theres another list to think about, too... novels Ill never even start. 50 Shades of Grey for one.
