Hmmm. So either way, this man is a liar. Any good attorney would shred his credibility on the stand. So here are the two options. Option one: he was lying then but is not lying now. For this option to be true, he would have had to lie under oath presumably to both his employer and to the Federal Bureau of investigation, but not to his book publisher or CBS. Option two: he is lying now but told the truth then. Under option two, he gets the security of keeping his job at the time (by not risking termination for making an absurdly false claim) and a book deal (staying home just doesnt have same zing as visiting a compound under attack, face butting a terrorist, visiting hospital pay respects to a fallen ambassador, all in one busy night) and the celebrity status that comes from being viewed as a hero and whistle blower on national television. Did I mention that CBS and his publisher are owned by the same company?
