Hnrble Arvind Khanna Ji Congress should look beyond the AAP factor for its poll debacle in Punjab The recently concluded General Elections should serve as eye opener for the Congress in Punjab for two reasons. One, this time the people did not opt for the Congress as a better alternative to the ruling SAD-BJP alliance, despite the massive anti-incumbency sentiment against it. And two, the existing Congress leadership in Punjab failed to inspire and give confidence to people. Had the people of Punjab any faith in the leadership they would certainly not have opted for a different alternative other than the Congress. It is indeed a fact that the AAP cut into the Congress support base as was duly noted by the Anthony Committee. But why did it happen? The main reason is that the existing leadership of the party in the state failed to inspire confidence. Despite the Aam Aadmi Party drawing a blank across the country including in Delhi, where it formed the state government just six months prior to the General Elections, it performed impressively and surprisingly better in Punjab, winning 4 seats while coming within the striking distance in at least three more seats. While there was already no doubt about his popularity, the Amritsar verdict re-established and reaffirmed the public belief that Capt Amarinder continues to remain the charismatic mass leader who is loved and trusted by people. It was his presence that made the party in Amritsar to fight as a united and cohesive force that resulted in a landslide victory for the party. It is high time that the party leadership recognises the fact, and sees the writing on the wall that Capt Amarinder is the only leader in Punjab who can unite and lead the party and rejuvenate the cadres. Ask anybody anywhere in Punjab as to who is the most popular leader in Punjab, and the instant answer will be Capt Amarinder Singh and deservingly so.
