Holiness vs legalism If holiness had an evil twin, it would be legalism. The issue is that most professing christians can no longer discern between the two. Many go so far trying not to be legalistic that they forsake holiness and salvation. Without holiness, no one will see The Lord(Hebrews 12:14). So lets go over a run down of some examples of holiness and legalism. Holiness: Not watching shows on tv or movies that promote sin. We should abstain from every appearance of evil(1 Thessalonians 5:22) so when you park yourself infront of the tv to watch scandal, it isnt a preference. Its a sin Praying all the time is holy(1 Thessalonians 5:17). Legalism would be praying real loud and long, constantly saying the same thing over and over so others can see you and think youre holy (matthew 6:5) Dressing modestly is holy. Showing up to church with a diamond studded outfit, elaborate hairstyles and 12 different church hats is legalistic (1 timothy 2:9) Fasting is holy. Fasting and telling everybody so they can think youre holy is legalistic (matthew 6:18) These are just a few examples. The big difference between holiness and legalism is that holiness is meant to please God alone. Legalism seeks to look good infront of others while not truly being set apart to God (matthew 23:25-26) Legalism is a perpetrator. The devil always tries to make a counterfeit of Gods goodness. If youre doing stuff to seem religious to people instead of truly trying to please God, repent. Hypocrites receive the same punishment as those who reject God altogether.
