One of my professors sent a message to everyone in my class saying this.. My first thought is, we have five quizzes for this class that are automatically graded.. One extra credit discussion post, and four actual discussion posts. And you are so damn lazy you will not grade them. So she has to grade four things, and there is an extra credit option. I would love to say I feel I am getting something out of classes that I am paying money to take, but it is less and less the case in at the College of Southern Nevada, b but I digress. I will omit her name.. For the sake of some reason I honestly am not sure of. Congratulations! This is a “grade amnesty discussion. What does that mean? Well, it simply means that your grade for this assignment is based on your hard work, and EVERYONE who completed the assignment, will receive ALL of the points for the discussion. Woohoo (and lucky you)! Now, you may wonder (or not) as to how or why I am doing this for our assignment? I could explain in great detail, or, I could just say, Be happy, go with it, and move to the third discussion. First, please look over the information and comments I wrote for each of you individually, from our first discussion (some noting information about things, such as: not using bullet points, some about not including the questions with your answer, some about writing in paragraph format, etc.). Anything I noted for you personally, please go back, check it out, and if I made notes for you, fix those items for future work. Second, this will give you a bit of extra time to really dig in on the last two discussions (documentaries) and the remaining concepts in our course text readings which you may find applicable to these films. Of course, you may find that something came up earlier in the course is useful, however, please, do not think its in your best interest to go back and utilize as your cited material something as simple as the term race or class... go deeper and really think about the ideas in our text and in our films. Both are full of complexity and ideas that definitely coincide. (And just because we now have this “extra time, let’s not wait until the last minute to either read the chapter, nor watch the films. You may even need to watch or read them twice, so set aside the time necessary to make these both valuable to you, and a good outcome for your assignment.) Last, if you are having any difficulty with the readings, or writing up these discussions (which are very much like mini-papers or analysis, like any college course) dont hesitate to hit the Smarthinking Tutoring button over there on your left here in Canvas (under the announcements tab) here in our class, and get some assistance. If you are on campus, head over to the Writing Center for some advice. This never hurts for ANY course, and just because youre in an online course does not mean you dont have access to all of these resources, nor that you shouldn’t take full advantage. In closing, I truly enjoyed going over your first discussion posts. For discussion two, please dont be fooled, I am and will read through all of your second discussions; Ill just get through them much (much) faster, going through them and taking them in, without the start, stop that Id usually be doing to critique and grade your hard work. Looking forward to your insights on D3 and D4. (Oh, and if you have already completed these, you are still free to make changes to these last two discussions up and until each of their deadlines.)
