Home and Away can add another rising star to its list of international acting successes in the form of Aussie actor Luke Mitchell. Once renowned as Summer Bays resident Romeo Smith, the 29-year-old could soon be counted in the same league as Chris Hemsworth, Guy Pearce and Ryan Kwanten, who all started in Australian soaps before making their mark in Hollywood. After announcing his exit from the long-running show at the end of 2012, Mitchell, who married his former Home and Away co-star Rebecca Breeds last year, relocated to Los Angeles and threw himself into the chaotic TV pilot season, where hundreds of roles are up for grabs. The Gold Coast native was cast in a lead role for the CW Networks action-packed sci-fi drama, The Tomorrow People. Mitchell stars as John Young, the leader of the Tomorrow People, a super-human race with powers of teleportation, telekinesis and telepathy. But they are in constant danger, hunted by the anti-telepathic organisation known as the Ultras. Though far from Mitchells days on the sun-soaked beaches of Summer Bay, he admits it was a nice change of scenery to delve into a new genre. It was really refreshing to play a character that was very different to Romeo. Tomorrow People has really stretched me . . . It was nice to be able to push my boundaries as an actor, because my experience is relatively limited, I would say, for an actor my age. Ive done a few shows back home, I had a guest role on Neighbours then a lead role on H20, then three-and-a-half years on Home and Away, which were fantastic experiences and I learnt a lot. Mitchell said there was a bit of preparation to be done ahead of filming the new show, although by that point he had already mastered the American accent. With the fight scenes, especially for the pilot episode, we got a bit of training. We had the best stunt teams; they were the same teams that worked on (US action series) Arrow, just to give you an idea of the quality of the stunts. So its all new skills to acquire but its just like learning how to dance, because its all about choreography and the timing. The Tomorrow People will wrap up its first season in the US this week, although a second season is yet to be announced. Mitchell will be anxiously waiting to see if the series will be renewed but the show has already garnered a strong following of fans who are using social media to lobby for another season. Its one of those things that you hope it continues but you know that anything can happen, Mitchell says. Its the life of an actor, youre constantly waiting for something, so youve just got to get used to it, be patient, work hard and believe everything happens for a reason.
