Homecoming Journalism Alumni Panelist Career Talks for 2014 Cardinal Lounge in Angell College Center Friday, Oct. 17, 2014 9 a.m. to noon These sessions by Plattsburgh SUNY journalism alumni are open to the campus community. Alumni presenters will talk about their careers in journalism and public relations and how their academic training was essential or beneficial. In addition, they will discuss how to best prepare for a career in the field. They will give practical advice and tips. 9-9:50 a.m. Jessica Shea ’09, associate Web producer/editor, National Geographic Society, Washington, D.C. Served as editor-in-chief, senior editor and copy editor for All Points North. Worked as an intern at The Daily Star, Adirondack Life, Saveur, and ForbesTraveler. Studied for a semester in Spain during her senior year. Received her masters degree in childhood education from City University of New York at Hunter in 2011. Worked as a freelance editorial assistant at Scholastic News, a weekly classroom magazine for elementary students. Began work at National Geographic in 2012 as an associate web producer and editor in the education department, specifically working on NatGeoEd.org. Magazine journalism major. 10-10:50 a.m. Rachel Hislop ‘11, online content manager, Parkwood Entertainment, New York, New York. Served as staff writer for Cardinal Points’ fuse section as well as All Points North. Interned and then freelanced for New York City-based fashion magazine NYLON for three consecutive summer and winter breaks. In fall 2011, accepted an intern position with Russell Simmons’ news and pop culture website GlobalGrind. Shortly after, was promoted to weekend editor and eventually worked her way up to style editor of the site. In 2014, was named as one of Huffington Post’s “16 black fashion and beauty editors you should be following during New York Fashion Week.” In spring 2014 she resigned from her position as Global Grind’s style editor to join Beyoncé’s management company, Parkwood Entertainment, as the online content manager. Magazine journalism major. 11-11:50 a.m. Anthony Malakian ’05, U.S. editor, Waters, New York, New York. Served as the managing editor and opinions editor for Cardinal Points. Worked as an intern at the Press Republican. Started professional career as a sports reporter at The Journal News, a Gannett daily in White Plains, New York From there freelanced for media outlets such as Yahoo! Sports, Metro newspapers, Boxing World, MMAFighting and others. Moved into financial journalism covering the banking industry for American Banker. After two years, jumped to current job covering capital markets and technology. Newspaper journalism major. This event is free and open to the public thanks to a generous grant from the Plattsburgh Alumni Association and Plattsburgh College Foundation.
