Homeless people living under open sky in Pulwama - KJ Correspondent PULWAMA: Large number of people rendered homeless in the September 5 floods spend their days and nights under open sky in Pulwama. The administration has so far been unable to address the colossal damage. Hundreds of houses have either collapsed or have developed cracks that rendered them unsafe for living. The revenue department in its assessment has shown that 4164 houses were completely damaged and 15353 houses suffered partial damage. 36953 miscellaneous structures which mostly included cowsheds and granaries were also damaged. The residents of worst hit villages said that the government has directed them not to enter the houses which have developed cracks and were demanding an affidavit from the households that people would themselves be responsible if they enter into the sagging walls of these houses. “We have been pushed into a trap as neither we are allowed to enter the houses which have developed cracks nor any tents are provided to us so that we can reside safely inside them,” said Farooq Ahmad Naikoo, a resident of Beighpora village where 100 houses suffered complete damage and 100 others have got partially damaged out of 300. The flood affected people alleged that the assessment activities being carried out by the revenue department were not up to date as most of the officials prepared the list of affected people on hearsay basis without visiting the victims. “Patwari who was scheduled to visit and assess the losses in our village visited one of his friends and jotted down the detail from that very person and left without turning to people who were left with nothing accept themselves,” Shabir Ahmad Wani, a resident of Gulzarpora where 52 houses have suffered 100 percent damage and nearly 200 houses are partially damaged out of 300 households. Deputy Commissioner Pulwama Sajad Ahmad Khan said that they have sent the requisition for the tents and other materials six days back but they have not received anything from the government yet, hoping that the requisition would materialize soon.
