Homes evacuated as Barcelona forest fire threatens residential area A FOREST fire in the province of Barcelona has caused four homes to go up in flames and an entire residential complex to be evacuated. The blaze broke out yesterday (Sunday) near a restaurant in Vallirana at around 19.00hrs and has wiped out over 100 hectares of countryside. Emergency services say the inferno has spread towards the urbanisations, or housing developments Can Bugunyà and Vallirana Parc, where between 1,500 and 2,000 people live. Residents on various streets – C/ Moreneta, C/ Lurdes, C/ Madrid and C/ Baleares on the latter urbanisation have been forced to flee their homes, while the rest were told it was safe to stay put as long as they did not step outside or open any windows or doors. High winds and temperatures of at least 37ºC in the shade have made it difficult to bring the fire under control, despite the presence of 18 police cars and another 62 fire engines, helicopters and hydroplanes, fire-fighters, forestry brigade workers and the Civil Protection squad. The flames continue to burn and emergency forces are working tirelessly to prevent them from engulfing the residential areas, although in the early stages of the fire four homes had already suffered damage.
