The World Affairs Council of Seattle is recruiting local host families for our July Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI) and Jovenes en Accion programs! Program for High School Students from Mexico (Jovenes en Accion) NOTE: Still Seeking 10 host families! Apply today! This July, the World Affairs Council will host a delegation of Mexican high school students for two weeks for the annual Jovenes en Accion (Youth in Action) program. Jovenes in Accion is a program created by the U.S. State Department and the Secretariat for Public Education of Mexico targeting talented low-income Mexican student leaders. During this program, Mexican students will participate in service-learning activities, create action plans for the implementation of local projects upon their return to Mexico, live alongside Americans to promote cultural education and exchange, and further develop strong leadership skills. The goal of this program is to empower young leaders and create meaningful dialogue between Mexican and American citizens about cross-border relations. Once again, the World Affairs Council’s International Visitor Program is excited to partner with the State Department’s Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI)! This July, the World Affairs Council and MEPI will host a distinguished group of college students from the Middle East and North Africa. As a foundational principle of U.S diplomacy, MEPI works to empower young leaders and build pluralistic, participatory societies through partnerships between U.S., Middle Eastern, and North African citizens. MEPI projects are steps to transform the relationship between the U.S. and citizens of the Middle East and North Africa through opportunities for cultural exchange. If you are interested in hosting a MEPI student through our homestay program, please contact Rachel Paris-Lambert ([email protected]) for more information. •Official Seattle Dates: July 25 – July 31, 2013. •Number of participants: 17 Click here for a link to the homestay application. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Every year the World Affairs Council of Seattle hosts Youth Program Exchanges as a part of its International Visitor Program (IVP). These exchanges bring high school students from diverse locations around the world to Seattle for several weeks of educational, cultural and leadership programming. These students are all young leaders in their communities who visit Seattle to explore different themes in connection to their respective countries and relations with the U.S. Students participate in activities that connect them with local youth and youth organizations, they volunteer with local organizations, and they participate in cultural activities. Host families play a crucial role in the success of these youth exchange programs, and the World Affairs Council is always looking for local families interested in hosting international students. Students and host families often reflect on the experience as an incredibly enriching and unique chance to understand another culture. It is an excellent opportunity for local families to get a personal perspective on life in other countries. By welcoming these young leaders into their homes, host families contribute to positive long-term U.S. foreign relations through a mutually enriching experience. We look for homestay families that can provide the following: •One bed per student (rooms can be shared but beds cannot). •A welcoming and safe living environment. •Inclusion of the participant in the host family’s daily routine as well as show them around Seattle if appropriate. Participants will also make their own plans with other participants at times. Participants will have weeknights and weekends free. •Breakfast, dinner, and at times a sack lunch when lunch is not covered by the day’s activities. •Transportation to the World Affairs Council office in downtown Seattle via personal car, carpooling or public transportation, including ferries, at 8:30am and 5:30pm, Monday-Friday. Homestay families should also know: •All participants speak English. •All participants will receive a prepaid cell phone with texting. •Arrival and Departure: Host families will not travel to the airport to pick up or drop off the students for their arrival or departure from Seattle. Host families will meet and pick up their participant at a Welcome Reception at a central location and drop off their participant at a central location for transportation to the airport. •A home visit and background checks on all family members above the age of 18 will be conducted by World Affairs Council staff prior to arrival of participants. Home visits will be scheduled at the convenience of the host families. Planned programming will often include host family activities arranged by the World Affairs Council International Visitors Program. The program will also provide host families with detailed information concerning any cultural sensitivities and tips for a successful experience.
