Homewatch CareGivers partners with Van Andel Institute to support neurodegenerative disease research -- Learning that a family member or loved one is afflicted by a neurodegenerative disease, such as Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s can be devastating. It dramatically changes life for both the patient and their caregiver. Homewatch CareGivers, an organization which provides in-home senior care in the greater Grand Rapids area, has served clients afflicted with the diseases for ten years. Over that time, Homewatch has grown to become the leading agency for dementia care, so he and his employees have a special passion to make an impact in this area of disease. “Caring for individuals suffering from neurodegenerative diseases is truly eye-opening,” said Jeffrey Swain, President of Homewatch CareGivers.”It is extremely difficult on both the individual with the disease as well as their family members.” Throughout 2014, Homewatch CareGivers is going beyond providing caregiving assistance to become an advocate for neurodegenerative research. To mark their tenth anniversary, the company has set a goal to raise more than $10,000 to support neurodegenerative research at Van Andel Institute through the Institute’s grassroots fundraising program, Purple Community. 100% of all funds raised will go directly to the laboratories where diseases, such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, are under investigation. “Partnering with organizations like Homewatch CareGivers helps our research progress at a faster rate and discover improved treatments and therapies faster”, said Nikki Outhier, Purple Community National Programs Manager. Swain describes the organization’s commitment to disease research as a personal mission. ”When our clients suffer from one of these terrible diseases, we hurt for them like we would a close friend,” he said. Homewatch CareGivers employees and clients are participating in various ways to support fundraising efforts. The organization is building a float for the East Grand Rapids Fourth of July parade and is making a donation for each paper “flower” that volunteers create to adorn it. Tribute badges, honoring individuals touched by neurodegenerative diseases, are being purchased and will be displayed prominently. Also, Homewatch CareGivers’ 10th Anniversary Celebration Party on May 14 will feature a silent auction with all proceeds to benefit VAI. R.S.V.P. is required. “We know that 100% of every dollar raised is going toward efforts to alleviate suffering,” said Swain. “We may not be able to cure these diseases for our friends today, but we can certainly strive to make a difference for the future.” The community can learn more about Homewatch Caregivers fundraising efforts and in-home senior care services by visiting bit.ly/VAIHWCG or by calling (616) 975-1980.
