Homily Sunday, November 17, 2013 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C Theme: Living in Fear Brothers and sisters, I have to ask, do you know anyone who is afraid of spiders? What kind of other things are people afraid of? Can you think of what you are afraid of? When you become afraid what do you do? Fear is a good thing most of the time - it warns us when there is danger, and it gets us to run away or to do things to avoid the danger. But sometimes fear is not very helpful it makes it impossible for us to move forward. The scripture today, Jesus told his disciples about many things that that were to come such as earthquakes, famine, persecution, and wars. I can only imagine the thoughts going through minds as Jesus told them this. I think of fear, and the thought of running away. But remember, that Jesus also said not to prepare for their defense and that he himself would give them wisdom. What does this mean? We need to trust in the Lord and seek his wisdom which will lead our lives. Fear does keeps us alert, but we should not live in fear. We should not allow it to control our lives and keep us locked in our homes. Is it important to know when the end of days will come? The answer is so simple. No, dont listen to those who predict the end and give it a date. We have seen this through out history and we are still here. Each day of our lives is not a rite but a gift from our Father in Heaven. Make everyday mean something, make it a goal to live in the Glory of God and to honor him. Do not live in fear but in faith. Amen
