Honest review comparing one of my builds with a Fender limited edition AVRI thin skin JM: Eddie! What’s up? Hope all is well in NY! So, I was hoping to have a great review of the difference in sound on my Fender Thin Skin AVRI, and the Custom JM you sold me. I’m fairly new to the JM sound, but here’s what I can tell you. First, you’re right, though I don’t have a scale, the custom is definitely lighter.. more importantly, more balanced than the body heavy AVRI. Neither bad, nor good.. but the Custom is more comfortable definitely. Second, again, you’re spot on.. the resonance of this guitar blows my mind. The sound travels through the entire guitar. I feel like I could tune it, just by feeling the vibrations through it. You can feel the waves of the untuned strings, and can literally tune it by feel. The sound just radiates from it. The AVRI feels new, it doesn’t feel broken in. Though I do feel the sound, it’s just not the same, and you can tell it’s from the body. Almost like it’s trying to resonate, but it’s just muffled a bit more than the Custom. The neck.. great feeling neck. I’ve never been super stuck on any particular shape, or radius.. but this one does feel very nice. Love the wear on it, feels like a legit broken in neck. It’s very easy to play, and again.. you can feel the music in your hand. I like the AVRI 9.5 radius as well though, med/jumbo frets are perfectly fine too. Set up.. unreal. I’m assuming the neck is shimmed, as I’ve never had one shimmed, and the action is perfect. On the AVRI, it buzzes a bit, stock bridge, and not a particularly great set up. The Custom feels perfect. Ok, Sound.. The Custom definitely has an “Oumph” that the AVRI doesn’t. Just a bit more belly sounding, which I like. Like a perfect belch.. LOL. Seriously though, one isn’t necessarily better than the other, but they are different. I LOVE the neck pick-up on the Custom, and I like the Bridge a little better on the AVRI.. but it’s more that they are just different guitars, and sound a bit different. I like a bassy sounding guitar on the low end, and that is delivered with the Custom for sure. Finish/Aesthetics.. I absolutely love the color of the Custom. I’m so glad it doesn’t have a matching headstock.. the aged Nitro look is perfect. It’s really nice. The aging, checking, etc is very cool. I’m not normally a guy that likes “Faux-Patina”, but I really like it on this one. The AVRI is perfect, almost like I don’t want to play it, it’s so nice.. Definitely a studio guitar, while if I gigged a lot, the Custom would be the one that I’d grab for sure. All in all… it’s just a fantastic guitar. I want another! ... Anyway.. overall, I like everything about the guitar. Thanks for the great service, product, communication, shipping… and just being cool. Thanks! -C
