Hope everybody had a great weekend, Yall... Come Thursday I hope we all get our fill, Of turkey, dressing, and pumpkin pie, But more so of fellowship, family, friends and fun, And memories of holidays long gone by. Nowadays, most of us in this great land, Have plenty to be thankful for, But I, for one, remember when The wolf came knocking on our door. From those old holidays when things were scarce, My memory has not much paled, Some folks call the good old days, But I remember in finer detail. One Thanksgiving when I was about eleven, Work, for my Dad, had been very slim, My older brothers were grown and gone, Mama had a part time job, and had to go in. That left just my sisters and me, My Granny came down, too, My Dad was there, and a roasting hen, And I believe, maybe, a pie, or two. From my paper route earnings I brought a loaf of bread, From the bakery at 66 and Will, Fifteen cents, I felt so big, To help us eat our fill. Now when Granny, what a saint she was, Thanked the Lord above for our fare, No matter, ever, how little we had, Seems there was always plenty to spare. Yes, by todays standards, Wed had a pretty meager day, But we were still thankful for all we had, When Granny bowed her head to pray. My Dad, and Granny, are no longer here, Many holidays weve weathered, I miss Daddys laugh and Grannys prayers, And the times we spent together. So, I guess that really was the good old days, With loved ones together, making do, Never missing a great big feast, But knowing theyre loved in all they do..... Chester M.
