Hospital Update: ------------------- GSH Receives National Award Good Samaritan Hospital is being recognized for it’s community health care programs. Doctor Alan Stewart announced during Tuesday night’s Hospital Board Meeting that Good Samaritan had received the American Hospital Association’s 2013 Nova Award. GSH is one of only five hospital’s in the country to receive the award. Hospital President and CEO Rob Mclin says they’ve spent considerable time the past several years reaching out to the rural communities in a 10-county area. McLin says whether it’s educational classes like the Fit Kids program or the annual Men’s Fitness Tuneup…G-S-H has tried to improve the health of those in the community. McLin says this award also represents a lot of hard work on the part of hospital staff who provide direct, health care services to the community. Meanwhile– May was a tough month financially for Good Samaritan Hospital. According to Jerry Stump, chief financial officer, says the hospital lost 1-point-3 million dollars for the month. He attributed the operating loss to a number of extra ordinary expenses including about 453-thousand dollars in bad debts that had to be written off. Stump added that salaries for overtime not budgeted also added to the loss of net revenue. For the year however, Stump says the Hospital’s net operating margin remains positive. Stump told members of the Hospital’s Board of Governors that they’ve a firm called “Claim Aid” to try and provide assistance for the medically uninsured in an effort to reduce the number of bad debts. In other business last night, the Good Samaritan Hospital Board of Governors approved the purchase of a new Hematology analyzer for just over 168-thousand dollars. The equipment is used in the detection of such diseases as leukemia and lymphoma. The board also awarded a bid to Wolfe Construction of Vincennes to renovate the Oncology Nurses Station. Wolfe’s bid of 147- thousand, 650 dollars was the lowest of three bids received. Chief Operating Officer John Manning also updated the board on the Hospital’s multi-million dollar Beacon project. He says work on the new ambulance garage and entryway to the emergency room should be wrapped up by mid-July. August should see the start of steel girders going up on the Hospital’s new five story Gibault tower. Manning adde that furniture has been installed on the third floor of the Health Pavilion which is being remodeled to house the Neurology Department, Sleep Lab, and Wound Center.
