Host Richard Hentschel talks with Russ Higgins from the Northern - TopicsExpress

Host Richard Hentschel talks with Russ Higgins from the Northern Illinois Agriculture Research Center located in DeKalb County about how our soils are doing with all the rain we have received and what that means for crop root development. Overly wet soils can impact good root growth by displacing the soil oxygen normally found in the soil profile. Russ mentioned that the critical period for good soil moisture is when the field corn is tasseling. Soybeans can flower and set seed pods over a longer period of time. Russ also commented on the other crops a farmer can grow in addition to corn and beans. Winter wheat and oats and a newer idea is using a cover crop and its uniqueness to Northern Illinois.
