Hostal Cumbres del Volcan San Salvador, El Salvador Many - TopicsExpress

Hostal Cumbres del Volcan San Salvador, El Salvador Many guests ask us how we picked our name. If they know Spanish, they know that we are not on the cumbres del volcan, which means the heights of the volcano. We are in fact located on the foothills of the volcano, or Under the Volcano as Malcolm Lowry called it in his famous novel-- specifically under the Volcán Quetzaltepec, also known as Volcán San Salvador. Foothills would be faldas, not cumbres. Our name is actually taken from a famous Salvadoran folk song by Pancho Lara, El Carbonero. The song is the tale of a man who makes charcoal at his home high on the Cumbres del Volcan, then he brings it down to the city to sell. When I hear the song, I can imagine the Carbonero calling out on our street having come down from the volcano that looms over us every day-- both beautiful and menacing. This video is a performance of the Carbonero by the Ballet Folklorico at the Teatro Presidente, which is only 2.5 kilometers south of us next to the Museo de Arte (MARTE) and the landmark El Chulon (naked man) mosaic.
