Hotel The Lalit Great Eastern Kolkatta - (THE CITY OF JOY) thelalit/ Renovated and rechristened The Lalit Great Eastern — will reopen its doors on November 19, exactly 173 years to the day it started as the ‘Savoy of the East’. Great Eastern is not just a hotel. It’s history. It was one of the first hotels in Asia to run on electricity and perhaps the first ‘mall’ as well. It counted among its guests the likes of Mark Twain, Rudyard Kipling and Queen Elizabeth. And now you can stay in the same rooms that these legends once graced. The Lalit Great Eastern will reopen with 250 rooms —adding 37 to the old number. The heritage facade remains intact but the interiors have a new-age makeover. The majestic Darbar Hall has been converted into a swimming pool, health spa and terrace garden. “The Darbar Hall will be shifted to the newly built non-heritage portion,” a source said. The hotel will have three restaurants, each catering to a particular cuisine. With its stunning chandeliers, French-styled bar, plush carpets and awe-inspiring ballroom, Great Eastern had spawned many a legend. It was the only hotel in Raj-era Calcutta where British policemen stood guard. Its menu was unrivalled. It will have 250 rooms (195 delux rooms) City’s largest conference room Durbar Hall (old heritage hall modified) Confectionary section Swimming pool and spa.
