Houses collapse, kills 7 people in Blantyre on Tuesday Blantyre, January 14,2015: Seven people have been reported dead on Tuesday alone in Blantyre as their houses collapsed on them. Information sourced from the Blantyre District Council indicated that six of the deceased are from Blantyre rural while one was from Chilobwe Township. “Reports are still coming in but as of now, we have a case of one person dead at Chilobwe as a house collapsed on the person. But in terms of the numbers of houses that have collapsed the statistics are as follows: 11 in Chilobwe, 40 in Bangwe, 30 at BCA Hill Squatter and 45 at South Lunzu,” said Costly Chanza, Director of Town Planning and Estates Services at Blantyre City Council in an interview. Traditional Authority Kunthembwe confirmed the death of two children in his area who died during the night of Tuesday as the house they were sleeping in collapsed on them. “The house collapsed on three children, two died but one gained consciousness at the hospital as he fainted on the spot,” said Kunthembwe. Kunthembwe said the children come from Group Village Ntenje and were siblings. The T/A identified the deceased children as Tezifolo Ntambalika who was 10 years old and was in standard three at Dzunga Primary School while his brother was Fred Ntambalika who died at five. The Chief also reported the death of two other old women, Nasitiki Hamilton of Chimbanda Village and Ayaya from Ngwadani Village in Traditional Authority Kunthembwe who also died after walls had respectively fallen on them. Officer in Charge for Chileka Police, Mary Walusa confirmed the death of the two siblings but added that two more people have died around her area as a result of the heavy down pour. “I don’t have the specific details of the deceased but what I can confirm is that two more people have also been killed by their houses after they collapsed on them,” said Waluza. However confirming the incidences, Chileka Police PRO, Peter Kalaya said the deceased were found dead in the morning on Tuesday as walls fell on them. “The deceased are 70 year old Fydelia Kosamu who came from Steven 2 Village in T/A Chigaru and a man, Flyson Latete 76, from Nthanganyika Village in T/A Kuntaja,” said Kalaya in an interview. Meanwhile, reports at the Blantyre District council indicate that a total of over 500 houses have collapsed in all the eight traditional authorities of the district leaving thousands of people stranded and homeless. The District Commissioner for Blantyre on Tuesday called for a disaster management emergency meeting where he appealed to well wishers to offer donations to assist the victims to help reduce their plight.
